Hail damage is the most contested inspection in property insurance because functional damage — bruised shingle mats, cracked seals — often isn't visible from the ground and is judged shingle by shingle. Carriers and policyholders routinely walk the same roof and count different hits.
Build your evidence from three angles
Your position improves with: (1) the date and size of the hail event from weather reports for your address, (2) a licensed roofer's chalk-marked photo inspection showing specific impact points, and (3) damage to soft metals — vents, gutters, AC fins — which corroborates that hail of damaging size actually struck the property.
Repair vs. replace and matching
Hail also drives the repair-versus-replace and matching disputes. When damage is spread across the roof but the carrier approves only spot repairs, the question is whether patching meets the policy's restoration obligation. This varies by state and policy language — check both.
Post-storm canvassing
Hail-belt states see heavy post-storm canvassing by roofing companies and adjusters. The same rules apply: in Florida, solicitation within 48 hours is prohibited (Fla. Stat. §626.854(6)). Verify any adjuster's license before signing anything.
What the registry can tell you
Search for adjusters who list hail claims in your state. In Texas, where hail is the dominant property loss, the registry lists 1,843 licensed public adjusters from TDI's open data. Use the fee calculator to check your state's statutory maximum before signing a contract.
